Journey To Taize: A Contemplative Christian Evening

Tonight I was blessed to attend a Taize-style service for the second time. The first time was 10 years ago at a Presbyterian church; this time a United church hosted it.

The Ecumenical Community of Taize, France consists of approximately 130 brothers from 25 countries, and was formed during the Second World War, its purpose being to foster unity within Christendom.

Taize services are contemplative and meditation in nature, something that has appealed to me for many many years. It's funny, when I was a teenager all I wanted to hear was drums and contemporary music in the church; now I love silence and music that provides for reflection.

As most reading this will know, I moved away from many of the tenets of evangelical Christianity many years ago. To be honest, there was a period when I wanted nothing to do with the Christian church. I was searching and really coming to know what I - not my church or teachers - believed.

However, I am thankful that that period of total Christian withdrawal is over. I think it is so very healthy if you are able to take parts of your past which you find valuable with you into your future. Also, I now find it helpful and soothing to hear some Christian teachings and scripture at my new spiritual community, Unity (http://www.unitykitchener.com/)

I also find it very nourishing to attend Christian services fairly often. Tonight was beautiful. Dozens of candles lit at the front of a dimly lit sanctuary, people entering in the silence. At the front is a cross that looks like it is from an Orthodox church. And the service begins. For the next hour, a choir, organist and violinist will gently lead us in short, repetitive Christian hymns that are used at the Taize community. Scripture readings are interspersed. Then comes a wonderful peaceful 10 full minutes of silent prayer. The following part of the service is by far the most moving.

At this time, after The Lord's Prayer is recited, another set of gentle hymns begins. 2 women approach the cross at the front of the sanctuary, they gently lay it down on the altar. At this time anyone in attendance is welcome to approach the cross, kneel or stand, touch it if you like, and symbolically place your burdens there.

It had been quite a long time indeed since I'd knelt at an altar, and never at a cross, but I approached the altar, bowed down and touched the cross. There I released my burdens to God. (Yes, I believe that God is within us and expresses as us, but the symbolism of bowing down and placing your burdens at the cross is almost unspeakably powerful.) During this time, as someone softly weeps beside me, I hear the voice of God within me.

"I've got you covered."
"I will not leave you."
"I will stay with you."
"You can trust me."
"Release your burdens to me, my yolk is easy and my burden is light."
"I will bless you far more than you have even imagined. Hold on."

A couple more songs are sung, then a woman brings the Christ candle down from the platform and begins to light everyone's candles (that we picked up on our way in.) The lights in the sanctuary go dark, and we proceed in song and by candlelight into the adjoining gymnasium. A short prayer is given and the evening concludes with friendly conversation.

All in all, a beautifully powerful night here in Waterloo.

Another Taize service is being held at the end of February at a Catholic church in town. Give me a ring if you're interested in coming with.

Blessings and Love,

Mark Andrew

My Friend, Your Diamond Days Are Ahead

Maybe tonight you can't see the next step ahead, let alone the road ahead. Maybe you feel like you are surrounded by a cloud of darkness and you just can't snap out of it. Maybe it just creeped onto you out of nowhere, or perhaps it's been building for many years. Regardless, tonight you're not sure if you'll make it through. Maybe it's your job, maybe it's your health, maybe it's your relationship - maybe it's all 3...or more. I know how hard it can be. I get it, believe me I do.

But my friend, your diamond days are ahead. Your heart and your dreams are young, even if you look in the mirror somedays and feel old as your find new wrinkles. Why are your diamond days still ahead? Because your passions and your dreams are stronger than your fears and stronger than the clouds that surround you. I want you to do me a favour before you go to bed tonight. I want you to look in the mirror and say, with as much faith as you can muster, "I believe in myself. I believe in myself. I believe in myself." Try it even if it feels fake at first. If you want, you can try, "I love and appreciate myself just the way that I am." I have these words on a little piece of paper stuck to my bathroom and bedroom mirrors.

You're going to make it through this. You are too important, too valuable, and too beautiful not to. Find someone to lean on, someone to cry with. Allow yourself to laugh at stupid things. Have an extra scoop of ice cream.

You are loveable, you deserve happiness. The darkness of tonight will lead to your diamond days ahead.

Love,

Mark Andrew

Once They Were Boys & Girls

I'm nice and comfy and cozy in this plush red chair at a coffee shop in Waterloo. My laptop is on my, well, lap, I have a coffee in front of me, fun music playing, and there's pretty girls to look at.

But outside there is a homeless, or at least down and out man sitting on the ledge of the coffee shop.

There has to be more than loneliness and heartache for such as these - the depressed or otherwise mentally ill, those who have no one to talk with or worse, to come home to.

Once they were little boys and girls, full of promise, full of dreams. They got up on Saturday mornings and watched The Smurfs or Care Bears while scarffing down PopTarts. They skated on the backyard rink for hours practising their slapshot.

The whole world was theirs for the taking. Or maybe it wasn't. Maybe from an early age they were forced to take care of an alcoholic mother or protect their little sister from an abusive father.

I don't know, but somewhere, somehow, sometime these little boys and girls stopped dreaming, stopped living, and now they're just putting in time, punching the punchclock of life at the end of the day with no sign of a happier tomorrow.

My answers tonight? I have very few. Just a quiet prayer for the man sitting outside the window at the coffeeshop.

...there must be a reason you are here.

Cora Berger dies! I liken it to Myra Hindley and a woman falling into a fountain!

yes it is very sad when someone dies and my thoughts go out to the family (well unless it is Ian Huntley or Myra Hindley, then its claps all the way) (Even though I really do like the art work of Ms Hindley made up of kids finger paintings!) Okay I know that is harsh but I genuinely do actually like the art work! it kinda has a f*ck you attitude to it (to Hindley) but yes its striking and I like it God damn it!!!! but anyway I am actually going off topic (not to self that I want to do a blog on Myra Hindley!) anyway in the news today was an article about some has been wanna be celebrity that died under the knife today (or whenever it actually was as the article did not state it (or maybe I just didn’t read it)) but it is made out to be some sort of horrid thing that has happened. Yes it is awful that she died and I would never wish death upon anyone (well not many people!) but she DID go under the knife for boob jobs SIX times! yes! the news story would have been much more tragic if she actually died because she fell into a fountain in a shopping mall because she was texting! but NO she died because she felt that she needed to have SIX (YES! SIX!) boob jobs so that she could stay famous. Well I am sorry but she must have known the risks, she was clearly fame hungry and VERY greedy (I mean come on look at her boobs!!! there is enough there to share with the population of Spain!) sorry, I know I sound like I am being completely harsh when some one has died (I am sure she was nice) and if she was not then I am sure she was nicer than Ian Huntley! but please news reporters!... Do not make this story into some really sad “fell sorry for her” news story... She was a porn start who wanted massive titties so that she could stay in the public eye! If someone said to me “look if you text and walk then there is a slight chance you may fall over and hurt yourself... or even fall into a fountain and end up on youtube where everyone will laugh at you” then I understand those risks and if that happened then I would understand and deal with that situation (or not. in some cases) oh that was so harsh... sorry forgive me. My thoughts are with the family, not with the media!

Loved One, I See You Here & Now

I see you right where you are on this cold cold night.

I see you now for all your dreams and all your fears.

I know you intimately for you were made in my image. We are of the same substance.

I need you to do your best to release your fears to me. Do it consciously; write them on a piece of paper and burn it if you need to.

Do you think I would have brought you this far just to abandon you? Never.

Your dreams, your ideas, and your talents are there for a reason. I have placed you in this Universe to play a specific part.

Are things looking uncertain, cloudy, unclear right now? For your own good I need you to trust in me. I will lead you, but first you need to take that step and trust.

Did you ever play that "trust" game in school where you had to close your eyes and fall backward, trusting that a classmate was going to catch you? Well, Loved One, I need to ask you an important question:

Do you actually believe that my arms are here to hold you? What's more, do you even believe anymore that I exist? Maybe you've been battered by the years and have become tired and jaded.

I am the quiet, still voice in yourself that is saying "Don't give up. I will lead you."

I have only the best in mind for you. The way you connect or access my best for you is by faith and imagination. If you are too tired to try, then I ask you to try to try.

I love you, Child, and I have the best in store for you.

Follow me on Twitter @thescreendoor

I often get a lot of emails asking me if I am on Twitter and since I don't use my name, just wanted to inform everyone that I am indeed on Twitter.

Give Me a Job (not joking!)

Okay... I have not posted for a while (sowwii!) I have been trekking around the outback saving palm trees from extinction.. (SIMPLE LIE!) I have just been rather busy with work, portfolio building and getting over being ill (so like most people in the world... minus the portfolio building!) I have recently started to build up my portfolio again as I am determined to get into the subject that I studied at university. I want to be a shop designer!!!! (and I am not kidding!) the thing I worry about is not developing at all. After meeting many people who have been to university and still millions of years later they aren’t doing what they want to do, well... that makes me rather worried that I may also fall into the rather easy trap of retail. Now its easy to say that if you are determined to do something then you will get it but I am sire many of these people were determined too. I think the problem is when you aren’t successful and you eventually give up. Now the jobs I want to get into will be tough and I know that I will receive my fair few rejections but I just pray that eventually... maybe with some time and some looking I will eventually get to where I need. (Or maybe you will read this and just give me a really well paid job!) anyway, I am just blabbering now so I shall stop and sorry that its not as entertaining as I (try) to make them but I am just plodding along with my little life.... roll on pay day so I can spend ALL of my money on bills! woo hoo this month rocks!

Simon Says (American Idol Commentary)

I've never been a fan of American Idol. That being said, it makes for some rather fascinating television and occasionally births a star whose talent is worthy of the attention (see my review of Kelly Clarkson's show from 2009). That being said, I find the premise of the show a tad ludicrous, where they try and find someone with great pipes. My issue with it is that Bob Dylan, Axl Rose, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and dozens of  other acts never would have made it to the first round.

Which brings up a question we all  have to ask:

Do you want to be an artist or a celebrity?

If you truly want to be an artist, go out there, play the coffee houses and clubs and see if you can break through. If you win American Idol it's  unlikely you will choose the path you want, but be a puppet for corporate big wigs.

I guess my annoyance with the season premiere were all these people crying saying "My family needs this!". Look, my family needs it too...but you stand a better chance of winning the lotto than making it all the way to the finals. It just seems to me that instead of singing and finding a way to express yourself has taken a backseat to making a lot of money. While the paydays for American Idol winners isn't bad, it's not long term and it's unlikely to change you unless you really are motivated. With each passing year the shows seems to highlight the surreal and cruel more so than the talent. In the end, no one will remember it a few years from now. Look at Lee DeWyze; he had over 40-million people vote for him and his debut album has barely shifted 100,000 copies. Are you really going to sit there and tell me it's still about the music?

As far the new judge panel. It has no leader. Say what you want about previous seasons or Simon Cowell, but his comments and direction were spot-on. He was the only one who was really qualified to be there and the only one who was honest and whose quotes weren't soundbyted on ridiculous morning shows. Steven Tyler made a mistake here and even J-Lo, while a talented individual, well, they just seem out of place and the chemistry of the original 3 judges can't be replaced.

While the show will continue to make a lot of money, don't expect it to be the commercial force it once was. It appears that once again, Simon Cowell knew when to walk away.

Review: "It's Your Time" by Joel Osteen, 2009

If you’ve been in a bookstore sometime in the last 5 years or so, you’ve most likely seen this man’s face staring back at you from a book cover. Or more accurately, you’ve seen his face smiling back at you. This is the main reason why I had poked fun at Joel Osteen for years. I mean, he’s always smiling! There’s just gotta be something weird about that. Also, I tend to be suspicious of anyone whose book subtitles suggest “5 Ways To A Better You,” or something of that nature.

However, as the years have passed, my curiosity trumped my suspicions, and I had the feeling that I just might agree with some of the things Osteen was saying. After all, I tend to read mostly inspirational, self-help books. My last few reads have included “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale, “Life Is For Living” by Eric Butterworth, and “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. So why not give Joel a try, even though I was a little hesitant since he’s still within the realm of Christendom and I haven’t exactly aligned myself with Christianity for several years.

One thing that I liked about Joel Osteen going into this book is that so many evangelical Christians can’t stand him; many find his brand of positive-thinking, prosperity Christianity “watered-down.” But I had a feeling I just might like it.

And let me tell you…I did.

First a little bit about Joel Osteen. Along with his wife Victoria he is the pastor of the largest church in America, Lakewood Church which meets in an old basketball stadium in Houston, Texas. He took over as pastor about 10 years ago after his father John passed away, and the church has grown tremendously in recent years. He is the author of 3 books: “ Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential (2004),” “Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day” (2007), & this book “It’s Your Time: Activate Your Faith, Achieve Your Dreams, and Increase In God’s Favor” (2009) as well as numerous supplemental books.

So let us begin with “It’s Your Time.” I will quote directly from the book as I go along.

Part One of the book is entitled “It’s Time To Believe,” and the reader is met immediately by positive messages.

“A global recession has forced many to postpone their dreams and cancel their plans. You may have lost your job. You may have lost your savings, maybe even your home. It could be that you have health concerns or relationship problems. Maybe you are frustrated because it’s taking so long to get where you want to be in your life. Yet now is not the time to talk yourself out of your goals and dreams. Now is not the time to get discouraged. You may think that you’re not even halfway there. You may feel you have so far to go. But the truth is, you don’t know. Your dream may just be up around the corner. You may think it will be another two years. But if you stay in faith, who knows? It may just be two more months. You are closer than you think. I believe it’s your time.”

Osteen talks a lot about being transformed by the renewing of our minds, and that we must walk by faith and not by sight. “That means we don’t have to see it to believe it. It’s just the opposite. If we believe it, then we see it.”

“When negative thoughts come and the burden seems so heavy you feel discouraged, just keep telling yourself: ‘I’m closer than I think. Right now the Creator of the universe is lining up things in my favor: the right people, the right breaks, the right opportunities.”

He also believes that the desires we hold in our hearts are there for a reason and that God will bring them to fruition: “Every dream that’s in your heart, every promise that has taken root, God not only put there but has every intention of bringing to pass. I want you to have this attitude: My time is coming. I’ve been giving and giving. I haven’t seen a lot of results, but that’s okay. I know my time is coming.”

There are times in the book where Osteen seems to veer close to what The Secret preaches, that is that if we believe that what we want to see is going to happen, it will happen: “Draw the line in the sand and say, “That’s it. I’m done being complacent. I’m done settling for mediocrity. I believe every dream, every promise, even the secret petitions of my heart will come to fulfillment.” When you have that kind of attitude, all the forces of darkness cannot stop God from bringing your dreams to pass.”

Osteen also recommends the use of positive affirmations, which meshes well with what I have learned from my experience with the Unity movement: “No matter how long it’s been, no matter how tempted you are to get discouraged, get up every morning and just declare it by faith: “My time is coming. The promise is in me, and I will not die until I see it come to pass.”

Osteen opens his third chapter “Seizing Your God-Given Opportunities” by saying “God created every one of us to be successful. Before the foundation of the world, He laid out an exact plan for our lives. And in this plan He has moments of favor that will come across our path. These moments are not ordinary. They are destiny-altering moments.” This may seem like the prosperity gospel to some, but personally I have no problem with it. Soon after he writes: “God has already prearranged times of increase, times of blessing. You will have opportunities to meet the right people, opportunities to advance in your career, opportunities to fulfill your dreams.”

Osteen also says more than once in the book that adversities in our lives are only present in order for us to overcome them and that blessing awaits us on the other side: “Every setback is simply a setup for a comeback. God not only wants to bring you out, He also wants to bring you out better off than you were before.”

He also promotes “speaking blessings” into our lives: “Words have creative power. You may not feel well, but it’s good to announce, ‘Health is coming my way. I will live and not die.” I very much agree with this approach. I think we all know people who talk about how sick they are all the time or complain about how their life looks. I think this only leads to more sickness and more unhappiness.

His fifth chapter is entitled “You Are Your Father’s Child.” Osteen writes: “God never created us to be average. We’re not supposed to drag around, barely making it, defeated and depressed. God created us to be the head and never the tail, to be happy, healthy and whole.” I agree with this line of thinking. I think that too often we settle into a life of disappointment, mediocrity, and we can live almost lulled to sleep. Osteen says that all of us have gifts, or spiritual DNA just waiting to be activated. “Before you even showed up on planet Earth, before you ever made it into your mother’s womb, God programmed into your DNA blessing, favor, strength, ability. He’s already equipped and empowered you.” And a little later: “You come from a bloodline of champions. You are not average. You are not mediocre. You have the blood of a winner - the DNA of Almighty God - and He has equipped you with everything that you need.”

Part Two of the book is entitled “It’s Time For Favor.” The sixth chapter is called “Praying Bold Prayers.” “God wants to bless you. He wants to enlarge your territory. Will you be bold enough to ask Him each day for more influence? Ask God to help you be a bigger blessing. That’s not a selfish request. The Scripture says: “You have not because you ask not.”
He also cites the Scripture that says, “According to your faith it will be done to you.” He writes that we should pray boldly and expectantly, something that gels with me.

The seventh chapter is “Thriving, Not Just Surviving.” Osteen writes that “God is limited only by our thinking. That is why it is so important that we don’t fall into survival mode and start thinking “My business can’t expand. The economy is too slow. I’ll never sell my house because no others are selling. I’ll never get a promotion when the business is coming back.” Furthermore, he writes “If you believe to barely get by, you will barely get by. If you believe that you will have a tough year, your faith will draw that in. So I encourage you to believe that you are blessed - not that you will be blessed - but that you are already blessed.” To me this all has to do with being transformed by the renewing of our minds, something I have been learning through Unity for some time now. We create our future by what we are entertaining in our minds. Also, if we ask God to give us good gifts and have even the faith of a mustard seed, and expect that we are receiving them, we will have them.

In the next chapter, “Choosing Faith Over Fear,” he writes “Every day, all through the day, you have choices. You can believe that God is in control, believe that He’s taking care of you and believe that good things are in store. Or you can go around worries, expecting the worst, wondering if you will make it.”

The ninth chapter, “Favor Has Been Released In Your Future,” suggests that God has already preordained blessings to come into our lives: “When God laid out the plan for your life, He lined up the right people, the right circumstances, and the right breaks. In your future, He’s already released favor, supernatural opportunities, divine connections. The breaks you need have already been preordained to come across your path.”

In chapter ten, “Speaking Faith-Filled Words,” he writes that “Your words prophesy what you become. Be bold. Dare to say, “I look great today. I’m made in the image of Almighty God. I am strong and talented. I’m blessed. I am creative. I will have a productive day.” Our words truly do have creative power. If you want to know what you will be like five years from now, just listen to what you say today.” And later on: “We all get tired and feel run-down sometimes. Still, the more we talk about being tired, the more tired we become. The more we talk about being depressed, the more depressed we’ll be. The more you talk about being overweight, the more out of shape you will become. Switch over to the language of victory.” Some people may call this nonsensical positive-thinking wish-wash. I disagree, but heck, even if it is, what is the harm in what he is saying? What is the harm of thinking and speaking positively?

Part Three of the book is titled, “It’s Time For Restoration,” and the eleventh chapter that starts out this section is “God Can Turn Back Time.” “God controls time. For every opportunity you’ve missed, every chance you’ve blown, God can turn back the clock and bring bigger and better things across your path.”

The twelfth chapter, “You Have Comeback Power” is about overcoming adversity in your life. Osteen says the darker the night, the brighter the day is to come. “God will not allow a trial to come into your life unless He has a purpose. He doesn’t send the storms, but He uses them. When you’re in difficult times, know that this challenge was not sent to destroy you. It was sent to promote you, to increase you, to strengthen you. You may not see how it will do that, at first, but God has a way. He sends adversity to bring out potential we didn’t even know we had.”

The thirteenth chapter is “Be A Bounce-Back Person.” “Bounce-back people have the seed of Almighty God. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives inside of you. Not challenge is too difficult for you. No obstacle is too high to overcome. No sickness, no disappointment, no person, no hurricane, no dive in the stock market can keep you from your God-given destiny.”

Chapter fourteen is “Living A Resurrected Life.” “One of the best things I’ve learned is that nothing happens to me, it happens for me. God would not have allowed me to go through difficult times if he didn’t have a purpose for them…So shake off self-pity. Shake off bitterness. Shake off hurt. You may have seen one of your dreams die. Maybe you lost a job, your savings, or a loved one. But failures and losses are part of life, not the end of it. Jesus died, was buried, and then rose again. That is how God works. You’ve been through death. You’ve been through the burial. Now it is the third day. It is time of your resurrection…Know that God would not have allowed a challenge to happen if He did not plan for something good to come from it.”

Moving along, the fifteenth chapter is “Your Sunday Is Coming.” “One principle the resurrection teaches us is that God will always finish what he started. No matter how dark it looks, no matter how long it’s been, no matter how many people are trying to push us down, if we stay in faith, God will take us from Friday to Sunday. He will complete what He started….I love the fact that God does not give up on our dreams.”

Part Four of “It’s Your Time” is called “It’s Time To Trust,” and the sixteenth chapter is entitled “All Things Work Together For Our God,” which is referencing a Bible verse that I really find a lot of hope in. “You may have had some disappointments. Life may not have treated you fairly. But you would not be alive if God was not planning another victory in your future. That setback was not the end. That breakup you went through years ago may not have made sense, but there is another ingredient coming. God will pull it all together.” And a bit later, “You may not understand everything you went through. But if you’ll just keep pressing forward, not letting the bitterness take root, you will come to a chapter in your future that will pull it all together, a chapter that will make sense of it all.”

Chapter seventeen is “God Remembers You.” Osteen points out that the phrase “God remembered…” is found over 70 times in the Bible. “God remembered means more than God has not forgotten you. It’s more significant than that. When we’re told God remembers you, it means He will overwhelm us with His favor. He will surprise us with His goodness….Maybe you’ve given up on a dream…but understand, just because you write off your dreams doesn’t mean God writes them off. God remembers you and He remembers the dream He put within you.”

Chapter 18 is “Gaining Strength Through Adversity.” “The fact is that any time God is about to take you to a new level, you will face opposition. There will be new battles to fight, new obstacles to overcome, maybe people who doubt you, or speak poorly of you….Deep down, know that you will come through challenging times promoted, increased, better off than you were before.” Also, “God would not have planted your dreams in your heart if He had not already given you the talent, the creativity, the determination to see them come to pass.”

Chapter nineteen is “The Anointing of Ease.” “Maybe you have struggled in some aspect of your life. Let me assure you that if you stay in faith, you will come into your own anointing of ease. God has promised He will go before you and smooth your path. He will make your life easier….You don’t have to beg God to be good to you. You don’t have to beg God to help you. God wants to help you.”

Part 5 of the book is called “It’s Time To Stretch,” and the twentieth chapter is “Stepping Into Your Divine Destiny.” “Every one of us has secret dreams and desires along with seeds of greatness implanted within us. You too have gifts to share with this world. There is buried treasure within you, waiting to be discovered. Your full potential has not been released, yet. Your God-given divine destiny awaits you.” And, “Before you were born, God knew you. He has planned out all your days for good. Don’t let your potential lie dormant. Tap into that buried treasure. Share your gift with the world.”

Chapter twenty-one is “Stay Open For Something New.” “In the coming days don’t be surprised if God brings new opportunities across your path. You may be offered a position that you feel is over your head. You may have an opportunity to change careers or go into a different field.” And, “You would not be alive if God didn’t have something great in your future.”

Moving right along, the next chapter is “Finding Your Place of Blessing.” “God has a particular place for each one of us, a place where each of us will find our highest purpose, where we will thrive and reflect God’s greatness. He has a specific job for you, in a specific community, where you are surrounded by specific people positioned to help you find fulfillment.” “When you follow your instincts and pursue the life that fulfills you, you will never go wrong.”

The final chapter is called, “Believe For A Supernatural Year.” “So often we limit our thinking. We think we’ll never overcome our challenges or we’ll never accomplish our dreams. We don’t have the connections, the talent, or the funds. But the problem is that we tend to look for answers only in the natural world. We have a limited perspective. We forget that God is a supernatural God. And just because we don’t see a way doesn’t mean that God doesn’t have a way…You’ve got to get in agreement with God. God has supernatural favor in store for you.” And, “My friend, God is in control of the universe. He is directing your steps, causing you to be in the right place at the right time. He knows what you need and He knows how to get it to you.”

In concluding the book, Osteen writes, “Remember, you have the DNA of Almighty God. He has equipped you with everything you need to fulfill your destiny. You are full of wisdom, strength, talent, and creativity. In your future are favor, good breaks, the right connections, the right opportunities. You may not have seen those blessings in the past, but this is a new day.”

Following the conclusion there is a page titled `We Care About You,`where Osteen says ``there is a void in every person that only a relationship with God can fill. I`m not talking about finding religion or joining a particular church. I`m talking about developing a relationship with your Heavenly Father through his son, Jesus Christ. I believe that knowing Him is the source of true peace and fulfillment in life. Osteen then encourages the reader to pray a prayer accepting Jesus.

To conclude this review/sharing of excerpts from It’s Your Time, I would just say that I highly enjoyed this book and will probably go back and read his other books as well. Osteen provides a hope-filled, positive message of faith that is a refreshing, welcome change from what you get on the evening news or in the morning paper. You can tell when reading the book that these are not just platitudes that Osteen is presenting; he deeply believes what he is saying. And most of it gels quite nicely with what I believe about life and God. It gives me hope that the best is yet to come, and that there is a power at work in the Universe that wants to bless me.

Hold On, Dear One. You Can Trust Me

I see your pain.

I know all about your heartache and heartbreak.

I have felt your let-downs and disappointments.

I know things have not turned out the way you had hoped for and planned.

Maybe you haven't landed in the career you wanted to.

Maybe the lover you once had - if you ever had her/him - is long gone.

Maybe the bill collectors are calling.

Maybe the doctor has given you a grim prognosis.

But I'm here to tell you that this is not the end for you. This is only the beginning.

There IS a reason that I placed you here on this earth; you are not an accident or something random. You were placed here as a reflection of a part of me that wanted to be expressed.

You contain gifts and abilities and dreams that are wonderfully unique to you. You may find this hard to believe, but you are bigger than your self-doubt or low self-esteem.

I have made you for a purpose. And what I need you to do now is trust me. No matter how grim or how dark your life has seemed up until now, I will not let you die before realizing my - and your - dreams and purpose for you.

What is my purpose for you? The specifics have to do with the talents, the gifts, and the dreams that you have held in your heart. Lift them up to me, talk to me, and I will lead you. But know this, on a larger scale, my purpose and plans for you are to prosper you and fulfill your hearts desire. I would never harm you.

Things may look bad, things may look grim. But don't give up. Talk to me, trust me, and I will lead you into golden opportunities and a happy, fulfilled future.

Hold on. Trust. The Best Is Yet To Come.

The Black Felt Tip!

okay so random I know but I am sitting here doing some of my portfolio work (well I am not at the moment because I am talking to you) but I thought about the black felt tip! Is it just me or does the black felt tip in a pack always run out first. Its so bloody annoying because you usually then have to go out and buy another whole pack just because that one pen has run out!. I did see in an art shop about ten million years ago a set that had two reds and two blues in it! (I sadly thought it was really cool and that company knew what they were doing!) why cant all companies do that? it can’t just be me who uses more black felt tip than petrol (maybe thats because I don’t have a car!) but it would be such a great idea! I know some of you will say “well why don’t you just buy the black ones separately” well no. that is the answer to your question. I do not want too :P (They are usually more than the whole pack themselves!) grr anyway... rant over and I must get back to my work... my black felt tip has not run out yet :P x

My Week - Day One

Yes I finally have a whole entire week off and I am just going to do what I want with it (girl power! huh see ya, hold tight!) So today I decided to go on a trip around London. I really wanted to go and see the Shard as I have been watching its progress over the last few years and now it has sprouted (I did originally say spurted!) onto the landscape and is the talk of the town. When the bus turned around the corner and you could see it my jaw dropped!... It is huge! (I always hear that!) there were people standing on the road taking photos and it just added a whole new dimension to this building other than... I just like it. It is not even completed and there is so much interest in the building.. I could wee myself with excitement, It is going to be amazing!!!

So apart from going to the shard I also went to the Tate modern and was very disappointed to find out that you could still not walk on the sunflower seeds (its an exhibition display at the moment (http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/unileverseries2010/default.shtm) Check out the link to the Unilever series in the turbine hall. Also the link to the Tate modern (http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/) I really do love all the Tates! I think they are so great to visit and unlike many museums and galleries.. if you leave it a month or two and go back then there are different things there (plus it is mainly free!) I do find it funny though with the videos that they play there. It always involves some naked woman rubbing something on herself!. Two displays that I really have liked though (and if any of you know what displays they are then please let me know because I would like to look them up) the first one was a room set up with large screens where they filmed different locations in a house and things moved etc etc and the other display was a room with screens where a guy had put video cameras in a round drunk and pushed it down a road somewhere and you see the views from inside the drum (pretty dizzy stuff!) but they were both amazing and I would love to read more into them if anyone knows anything about them!

After the Tate I decided to go to St. Pauls, I am getting a little tired of the place because I have been there so many times so I did go to a newly opened place called one new change. I went there on its opening and it was okay.. but today when I went there I asked if the roof terrace was open and it was so I managed to get pictures of the city from the roof of one new change! It was amazing (and very cold!) but it was such a nice end to the day as I watched the sun set before heading home!

Day one complete... I hope the week is as good as it has been so far!

I Choose To Believe...

Right now, right where I stand, I choose to believe...

- I believe that I live in an opulent, abundant Universe where there are more than enough blessings to fulfill and enrich each person's life.

- I believe that there is an intelligence which I call God or Spirit that is orchestrating the Universe. More than this, I believe that God is eagerly wanting to bless me with good gifts if I would only rely on Her and ask.

- I believe that when I ask God for what I need, I should not do so nonchalantly or half-expecting. I believe that God is goodness and abundance and that She wants to give me good things.

- I believe that as a child, or expression of God I inherit Love, Peace, Abundance, and Health among other things. When I am stressed or worried, I take a step back, breathe, and receive these good gifts that are readily available for me.

- I believe that I live in God when I live in Love, by loving the family and friends that God has placed in my life.

- I believe the Bible verse that says that all things work together for good for those that love God. Though things may look grim right now, I have faith that God will bring to completion what he started in me.

- I believe that I am unique and that I have talents and gifts that God has specifically placed in me, and if I am willing, God will use them for not only my personal fulfillment, but for the blessing of others.

- I choose to hope, I choose to be positive, I choose to expect the very best out of life instead of expecting the worst. God is my source, God is Life, and I live within God. As such, I am abundance, I am Love, I am Peace, and I am Health.

I align my mind with God within me now.

Wake Up Dead (with no Knickers on!)

Why is everyone so ill!!!??? It should me made illegal to be ill! (actually no because then I would be arrested or fined and I really do not have the money at the moment!) I have come to the conclusion that we all have mini aliens in us and we communicate by coughing. When I get on ANY transport (there I did not start with “When I was on the bus”) one person coughs and then it is followed by about twenty other people all coughing all over each other. I feel a bit left out so sometimes I just cough along too so they do not think I am odd! But seriously... Every year (and this one is far worse!) We should all have to go home and hibernate over the flu season until we kill the bugger! I have had some sort of flu, weather that is a runny nose, luminous snot, coughing until my brain falls out of my head...for coming up to a month! and I guarantee that when it goes away (IF IT EVER DOES!) then I will get it again within three days (I am like a bank balance!) but I really do hope that I wake up one day and its just gone completely!. I would actually run outside (try and find a hill somewhere and then dance on it waving my arms around in a blue dress screaming “the hills are alive with the sound of coughing!” (but it would not be my coughs) and then probably die of frostbite to the legs because I wasn’t wearing any knickers (BRITNEY!)) so yes for any of you that are feeling ill over the world I say this to you.. “Wear Knickers” its bloody cold outside!

One year ago this week...Butch Walker in Chicago

One year ago, Butch Walker set up shop in Chicago for a four night stand looking to the past and giving a glimpse of the future. It was an astounding set of shows and something you wish every artist would do at some point in their life. These were the ost revealing shows of his career. He did stints on the East and West coast but everything really seemed to come together during the Chicago stand.

I'll re-post the articles in the coming days. Most only ran as partial reviews on the blog with the full reviews running over at antiMusic.

You can go HERE to read and get links from the first three nights.

Expect The Very Best In Your Life

Do you believe that there is a power at work around you that is working for your benefit, a power that has your very best interests at heart? I for one firmly do. For me this is not just comforting news, it is a truth that makes me want to leap into the air and do the happy dance (video to come). I believe that this power has many names. The most popular, and Biblical name is God. You could also use Spirit or perhaps The Universe, or maybe Divine Mind. There is a verse in the Bible that says that all things are working together for good for those who love God. What is the definition of God when you scale it down to the core? God is Love. So I believe that all things are working toward our good for those of us who live in Love. It may not seem like it right now. Perhaps you're facing an illness that has persisted. Perhaps you've lost your job. Maybe your relationships have fallen apart. But I believe there is a power in the universe that is saying, "It will not always be this way, you will overcome, expect the best because that's what my plan is for you." By the power of our mind, we bring the blessings, the good things that God has always wanted to bless us with. I believe that God wants us not just to muddle through life day in and day out, rather She wants us to thrive, to have an abundant, exhilarating life. This is the point of faith. Faith is not about making sure that you fall in line with all the "right" doctrines. Faith is believing that God is a good God, that He wants the very best for us, and is just waiting for us to expect our blessings. If we truly are children of God, as I believe we all are no matter what our religious beliefs, we deserve good, no, great gifts as inheritors.

Look up, expect the very best, and know that God will give you just that.

iMovie! you ruined my video life! thanks!

This is probably just a glamorfied rant but I shall start anyway! (when are they not hey!) I was rather excited today as the Mac App store opened and I thought (woo!) I can have a little browse and a little buy of some things! (like you do) I saw the latest version of iMovie on there and yes I am giving away my secret!.. I use iMove lol (I have had a few people ask me recently so tada here is your answer!) but what is really annoying is that it completely ruined a video that I took hours making. Some new thing introduced on iMovie 11 is frame rates (I swear my videos had different frame rates in the first place so why this has affected it now I have no idea!) When I record with my video camera it has a different frame rate to my mac and if I actually know what I am talking about (which is very unlikely!) my audio is out of sync because I have some faster clips and some slower clips (Bastards!) all because I use two cameras!... Now I can read your mind already... The solution is just to use one camera (which I will have to do!) but why would apple change something that seemed to work so well before and now it doesn’t! what happens if I was an old person that had two cameras on one holiday and I wanted to make a video for my grandchildren to show how cool I am as a granddad!... GUTTED! I cant because apple just ruined my life! (yes I said it!) I am just rather confused and if anyone has any idea of what I am talking about let me know if this is true!... (nerdy question time!) if you have videos with different frame rates... can that slow or un-sync the audio... (nerdy question over!) this is going to get to me so much and I now have to re-make the whole bloody video again with one camera! I have just completely flopped in a mass of technical difficulty on youtube! Thanks iMovie! I hope you are happy!

Do I want a 36 hour day?

WHY is there so little time in the world!? I just feel like I have so much to do and so little time to do it in! (WORK GIVE ME A HOLIDAY!! (Okay I can’t complain as they have)) but I need the holiday just to do a catchup with my life! (WORK GIVE ME A REAL HOLIDAY!) I find that once I finish work (and I am sure that so many of you out there feel exactly the same!) I come home, have dinner, have a shower and then go to bed (throw in a little film or a book read if I have time (HARRY POTTER!)) but that is it! no time to chat, send e-mails, update CV’s, add to my portfolio, make videos, go places, organise meetings (all the other things i need to do) (blank space lol) I have tried being like my amazing ex housemate, who I swear never slept at all in the year that I lived with her (remembers the one that never showered in the year I lived with him) but I just cant stay up all night! I would DIE! and I really have no idea how people can do it! I admire you crazy people who sleep for 1 hour a day (I have 6!... no more... no less...) please, if there is someone out there that can make the days longer (or make my working hours shorter but pay me more!) then please wave your wand and do it! (I am sure that Harry Potter could!) lol oh how sad am I! anyway... I have just used up so much of my precious time writing this (and I am sure  that no one will actually read this and feel sorry for me!!) So I shall move on and try and get things done,

Butch Walker collaborates on new Avril Lavigne album

It's been 4-years since Avril has had a record out, but she returns on March 8th according to Shockhound.

While it is expected to me a more subdued affair, the helping hand of Butch Walker can never be a bad thing and I for one a excited to see what she has to say after a divorce and some maturity.

More from Shockhound:
While "What the Hell," the album's lead single — which Lavigne debuted over the weekend during her performance on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve — is a typically upbeat track along the lines of her previous work, Lavigne has been telling people for awhile that the album as a whole will be a more mellow and reflective outing.

"This album is different," she told MTV News in November. "I'm older now, so I think that comes across in my music, it's not as pop-rock and it's a little more mellow and it's deep. But my first single is very 'up' and pop-rock. The first single is very much like my older stuff, but the rest of the album is a departure."
The official track listing for Goodbye Lullabye is as follows:

1. Black Star
2. What The Hell
3. Push
4. Wish You Were Here
5. Smile
6. Stop Standing There
7. I Love You
8. Everybody Hurts
9. Not Enough
10. 4 Real
11. Darlin
12. Remember When
13. Goodbye
14. Alice (hidden track)

Reflection Review: John Mellencamp's 'Whenever We Wanted'

John Mellencamp has been in the news as of late sadly for all the wrong reasons. Instead of highlighting the amazing record and tour he had in 2009, the press is focusing on personal issues, which is a shame. He made some amazing music as of late and that is where the focus should be. Here's a sampling of my recent writing on the man.

  • The complete John Mellencamp Discography (through 2007) guide is HERE
  • My live review of his 11/27 Chicago show is HERE
  • No Better Than This album review HERE

Since last week I've had a lot of traffic on the discography guide, most likely due to the Whenever We Wanted cover. I can only hope that people took a few minutes to read my review of the album. While it's not by any means his best album, it's a damn fine record where he reintroduced the world to the electric guitar. It may not be a definitive record, but it's an important record for him at that moment in time and it houses possibly one of hiss five greatest songs ever, "Now More Than Ever", a song that resonates stronger and stronger with each passing year. Here's what I wrote in the Album Guide from a few years back:

Two weeks after Nirvana's Nevermind landed in record stores and three weeks after Guns N' Roses double-disc opus Use Your Illusion debuted, John Mellencamp was reborn. October 8, 1991 saw the release of Whenever We Wanted, the first album to be released under the last name he would ever use; John Mellencamp. Whenever We Wanted found Mellencamp striving forward and all but abandoning the accordion, fiddle and heartland music he had perfected over his last three albums. Whenever We Wanted showcases the thunderous return of the electric guitar. Not only is it a fine return to form, but he has turned up the volume producing his heaviest record to date. Right from the get go, the storming politically conscious "Love and Happiness" sets the course with thick crunching riffs that would not relent until the disc had spun all ten tunes. While the album is arguably his least adventurous since American Fool, that is not necessarily bad. Mellencamp took the pastoral sounds as far as he could go with Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy. Here the music is stripped to the bare minimum (or at least I thought it was until the release of Dance Naked). While Lisa Germano's violin is absent from the entire recording, guitarists Mike Wanchic and David Grissom lead the attack with their dueling guitars while drummer Kenny Aronoff and bassist Toby Myers keep the beat as John Cascella fills in colors with his Hammond B-3 organ to the guitar heavy record. The tour in support of the album is viewed by most Mellencamp fans as his defining moment as a live performer.

The album has more in common with American Fool than The Lonesome Jubilee, yet lyrically he was expanding his themes to world views (which he would continue to do with his next few albums) on songs like the epic “Now More Than Ever” (a deserving anthem he should perform regularly), “Last Chance” and “Love and Happiness”. Deep cuts like “Melting Pot” are uneven musically but winds up being a whimsical alternate route while the dreamy and atmospheric “Last Chance” is an homage of sorts to Chris Isaak and Roy Orbison. However, at the end of the day, the delight of the perfect pop tune could still be heard on amorous “Again Tonight” and the jolting “Get A Leg Up” showing that when you least expect it, one can still plug in the guitar and find their way home.

Free EP Download from Michael McDermott

I've written about Michael McDermott a few times here on the blog and over at antiMusic. In fact, Michael had my #1 record of the year in 2009 with Hey La Hey. He also gave one of the most blistering live perfgormances I caught all last year as well.

If you haven't experienced his music yet, now is a mighty fine time to check him out. He has a free EP to be downloaded over at his website.

Go HERE, scroll down a tiny bit to where it says "Free EP" and begin the journey.

Concert Review: Chuck Berry 1-1-11 Chicago, IL @ Congress Theater

Chuck Berry: You Never Can Tell
Congress Theater – Chicago, IL
January 1, 2011
By Anthony Kuzminski
{Photo Credit}

Any way you look at it, without Chuck Berry and his six-string guitar, rock n’ roll as we know it doesn’t exist. He is the man responsible for all that followed including the Beatles and Rolling Stones. This is why, a man who hasn’t had a hit in four decades can sell-out a 3,000 seat theater in the dead of winter. Promoted with grace by the same people who did the Riot fest recently in Chicago, there were no tickets to be had come show time and the crowd skewed much younger than most would imagine (at least half of the audience was under 35-years-old). I was expecting to be among the youngest at the show, but I found that everyone there was to see a legend. Whether they grew up with Berry’s music or discovered it because of Michael J. Fox, they were there to see a slice of rock n’ roll history, and that is just what they saw.

At 9:30, a 3-piece backing band took to the stage and then from the back, in a sparkling red shirt, white hat, black trousers and a Gibson guitar, Chuck Berry emerged to a swell of audience rapport. Commencing the festivities with “Roll Over Beethoven”, Berry seemed to be in a jovial and festive mood at first. Much can be said of his performing style, but even at 84-years-old, the way he plays the guitar is unlike any other. Part sly, part subtle and part blistering, there’s no one like him. With four musicians on-stage, no one else can create so much with what seems like so little. He alone performs all guitar duties and over the first few numbers, you can clearly see where Keith Richards stole every riff from.

The stage set-up wasn’t that different from what it would have been 55-years ago. Instruments and amplifiers were all the jazz Berry needed. Or at least we thought. Throughout history, Berry has been known for always being a wild card when it comes down to live performances. He travels solo and often doesn’t meet the backing band until he is about to go on-stage. On this nippy New Year’s evening, this seemed to be the case. While Berry appeared to be in fine vocal and performance form, he struggled to congeal with the backing band. Throughout the show, few songs were completed without interruption. “Sweet Little Sixteen” shook the crowd, but Berry’s laid back demeanor found him performing a mostly solo rendition of “Everyday I Have the Blues”. “School Days” had the crowd shaking but “Let It Rock” proved to be a show stopper, literally. As Berry was shredding on the guitar, he stopped midway through, took off his guitar and sat behind the keyboard to finish the song. Despite reports from various media sources, I can without question say that when Berry sat behind that keyboard, his hands came alive the same way as they do when he is grasping a guitar. Known for his legendary guitar riffs, he showed the sold-out crowd there was more than meets the eye when it comes to Chuck Berry. He performed the song on piano (mostly solo) with zeal. He may not be Johnnie Johnson, but he could give quite a few a run for their money.

The remainder of the evening featured a number of broken performances. “My Ding A Ling” and “Johnny B. Goode” had the crowd singing along, but both songs were indecipherable until the choruses kicked in. After a dispirited “Reelin' and Rockin'”, Berry once again banished the keyboard player to the side and sat behind the keys. This is where reports are appearing to vary. From my viewpoint, at no point did I see him collapse. He may have been ill but to my eyes he seemed dispirited and broken. While I would never yearn to back Berry up, I am not sure if the backing musicians for this performance were ready to take on Berry. This is a man whom Keith Richard and the E Street Band couldn’t tame and it’s highly unlikely any local musicians could even try. After sitting behind the keyboard, a number of personnel came to the stage, surrounded him and whisked him away. The crowd was appreciative and applauded and then announcement came that the bars would remain open and that DJ’s would provide music for the rest of the evening. Then 10-minutes later, Berry reemerged from the backstage, slid his guitar on and made his way to the front of the stage. He struggled with getting his guitar in tune (something that had been an issue most of the evening) and after a few minutes, he was whisked away once again. An announcement was made to stick around for 15-minutes as Chuck Berry would be checked by a doctor backstage. The crowd cheerfully waited and 15-minutes later, Berry emerged for the final time without an instrument in tow. He came out to apologize to the crowd and explained he had been backstage being checked on by doctors. He wished the crowd a good evening and then proceeded to do his infamous “duck walk” and like that, he was gone.

One should never expect Chuck Berry to play it straight or to immediately gel with a backing band. It would almost be like marrying Charlie Sheen and expecting to never to encounter the police, hookers or blow. Berry is a one-of-a-kind a musical pioneer. I can’t say his Congress Theater performance was legendary, not by a long shot, but without question it was memorable. Regardless of what one felt about the performance, for the younger crowd, they’ll show their children Back to the Future one day and will gladly tell them about the night they saw the man who invented rock n’ roll.

London Fireworks 2011

I have to say that New Years 2011 firework display for London was something more than expected (I did think nothing could beat last years display and also Dubai's display this year). It was the most beautiful firework display I have aver seen in my life (yes I have seen MILLIONS! (and I am not joking)) it even beats the previous display last year for London! A huge congratulations to London and also to the people the created it. It took 5 months and I am guessing many lorries of fireworks! What annoys me is people who comment each year saying it is a waste of money and that it should be better spent on other things and I completely disagree with this! This display alone would have made more money for London than it actually cost to fund it. People do not see that it benefits the city massively!. The amount of tourism that it brings and and also helps our economy. Its promotion for the city, entertainment and also makes many millions of people very happy. I honestly believe that it does far more good than bad and I hope each year it gets better and better! London you have done me and millions of other people very very proud!.

So to bring it back round to the actual display its self... I had my mouth open for the whole 10 minutes! (and not because I was ill!) I think I swore a couple of times and I really did not want it to stop!. I could even hear it outside my window which was amazing but I was very envious of everyone that was down at Embankment this year (its my first year of not going as I was ill) One thing that also makes this display like no other is that we are GMT, we have an amazing clock (and tower! and bells!) to play it out too and finally... what better stage than the London Eye to strap all those fireworks onto and set them off!!! Hope you enjoy the video and have a great New years!
