Former Black Panther leader Geronimo Pratt died today at the age of 63.
According to his lawyer Stuart Hanlon:
“Pratt died at his home with his family, in a small village in Tanzania.
Back in 1972 Pratt was convicted for the murder of Caroline Olsen, but Pratt always maintained his innocence claiming he was in Oakland for Black Panther meetings on the day Olsen was murdered. You see the government fears strong black leaders who opposed their tactics and culture of of abuse and suppression within the urban communities.
In 1997 Pratt’s lawyer Johnnie Cochran got his sentenced overturned on the grounds that the prosecution had concealed evidence that might exonerated the defendant. The evidence with-held from him during phis trial, was that he had been under government surveillance for over a year prior, and including that day. That surveilence proved he was hundreds of miles away when the murder was committed, and therefore could absolutely not have been convicted by him.
When Pratt was released from prison he worked on the behalf of men and women who were wrongfully incarcerated.
Here’s what Geronimo Pratt had to say when he was released from prison:
“I feel relieved that the L.A. DA’s office has finally come their senses in this respect. But, I am not relieved in that they did not come clean all the way in exposing their complicity with this frame up, this 27-year trauma.”
In 2000 Geronimo Pratt was awarded $4.5 million from the city of Los Angeles for his false imprisonment. This was all the dirty work of the FBI. I would tell you to ask J.Edgar Hoover but he’s dead.
Geronimo Pratt was a activist who suffered from high blood pressure but he wasn’t interested in the government pay out, all Pratt wanted was his life back and to have children.
Elmer Geronimo Pratt would be missed by many activist. Know why? Because Geronimo Pratt was a good man who stood up against a corrupted judicial system.
